Race City Festival- Fun with Scattered Showers

The annual Mooresville Race City Festival came off last Saturday with only a few rainy delays with lots of people crowding Main and Broad Streets. Showers in the middle of the day thinned the crowd for short periods, but at least it was much cooler than we’ve experienced in the past. I met quite a few friends on the streets, and it looks like everyone had a great time. Click on the thumbnails to get a larger photo.

Mooresville Artist Guild Show Reception May 8th

In Mooresville, we know about more things than just Lake Norman watersports and NASCAR racing!

The Mooresville Artist Guild at 103 W. Center Ave. is presenting its 31st Annual Spring Artfest now through May 31st. The opening reception and awards ceremony will be held Friday May 8, 2009 from 6 – 8 pm. The artists, their families and friends are encouraged to attend. The general public is also invited to attend. The gallery is in the old Mooresville train depot in the downtown area. See more info HERE. This all happens during the monthly At the Corner of Art and Main artwalk in downtown Mooresville on Main and Broad Streets from 6-9 PM. Shops will be open, wine and cheese provided and art displayed in the shops.

Iredell Arts Council- Cool Things Happening

My work with the Iredell Concert Association helps bring high quality live music to Iredell County. One of the groups that the ICA works closely with is the Iredell Arts Council. Their mission- “Serving as the umbrella organization for the arts in Iredell County, North Carolina and the conduit for North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Funding. Offering information, referrals, event coordination and general support for artists and art activities.” They’ve got a very nice website that offers a calendar of upcoming events encompassing all of the arts, and a substantial list of links to various other arts organizations. Understand that we’re not talking just about classical this or that. They truly include all kinds of arts of interest to a wide slice of the citizenry. Dale Gonyea was Great!

Singer-songwriter-pianist-comedian Dale Gonyea performed on Sunday and Monday for the Iredell Concert Association. Sunday was for the community at the auditorium at Mooresville High, and Monday was for enthusiastic Brawley Middle School students. Dale’s style is to interweave excellent piano playing with fun chatter about his life, his background and a very hefty portion of local details incorporated into his humor. This he does in a funny and engaging way. The Sunday crowd seemed to really enjoy his songs made up of names of local communities- how would you sing about Eufola? On Monday morning, Dale had the Brawley Middle students if not in the palm of his hand, at least under reasonable control. Many of his jokes and comments were directed toward encouraging their appreciation of music and learning to play musical instruments for the sheer self-satisfaction. I think they “got it.”
