Could Mooresville change from Race City to Motor City?  Mooresville’s very own car manufacturer, Li-ion Motors says that they are taking deposits on two models of all-electric cars that they will produce here.  Li-ion recently won a large piece of the $10 million Automotive X Prize for meeting all of the requirements put before them by the competition organizers, beating many other entries from around the world.  Check out previous posts on these cars by using the search term “x prize” in the search field to the right. Li-ion Motors Wave II

They’ll be selling two models, a high-end sports car and a more modestly priced two-seater.  Lets hope this is just the beginning of a growing manufacturing and sales business here in Mooresville and Iredell County.

HERE is their full press release.  HERE is a Forbes article on Li-ion’s showing at the Detroit Auto Show.

I previously reported that our Mooresville neighbors at Li-Ion Motors are doing well in the $10,000,000 Progressive Automotive X Prize competition which is designed to drive out the best technology for future energy-efficient vehicles.  Well the folks at Li-Ion continue to advance and do us proud.  They survived all of the on-track testing with great numbers on efficiency and now they are in the Validation phase where they go through various tests on a dyno to confirm the on-track performance.  Go to the web sites linked above to check out more about this competition and how Mooresville’s funky little green car is working to make some history.  Seems only right since they are from Race City USA!

Mooresville, NC is known as “Race City USA”, and most people relate that to stock car (and truck) racing.  No doubt those series get the most attention here, but some of the most interesting racing is not about how fast you go on a tank of gas, but how far you go on a tank of gas or a full charge of your batteries.  I’ve been following a competition called the Automotive X Prize on Gizmag.com.  You can read about the competition HERE and HERE.  If you are tired of relying on buying oil from people who don’t like us, or worrying about destroying our oceans and coastlines with drilling screwups, then this competition should be of interest to you.  You know that there will soon be some pretty cool electric vehicles on the market, but they all still have some work to do before they become a practical alternative that will make us want to give up our gas-guzzlers

What does Race City USA have to do with this?  Well, Mooresville is home base to one of the twelve finalists in the competition, Li-ion Motors’ entry, the Wave II.  Check out there team site HERE.  I’m pleased to see that our community has a team in this competition and wish them the best.  You can follow the progress of the competition at any of the above sites and cheer for your team!
